As a wedding videographer in Northern Ireland, I’ve filmed weddings in every kind of weather imaginable — but Carla & Ciarán’s Red Castle Hotel wedding in Donegal will always stand out. Storm Amy decided to make a guest appearance, bringing torrential rain and fierce wind from morning to night.
You might think that would dampen spirits, but not this crowd! From the moment I arrived, there was nothing but excitement and laughter. The atmosphere was warm, elegant, and full of energy.
Carla looked absolutely stunning thanks to Kelly Wilson Makeup and Zara O’Neill Hair, with her bouquet by Cottage Flowers adding a beautiful touch of colour to the grey skies outside. The ceremony was filled with emotion and music from The McBennett Sisters, creating a perfect backdrop for the couple’s vows.
When it came time for portraits, Donal Doherty Photography led the charge — and we pulled off the quickest photoshoot in history, dashing under a grove of trees for some romantic, windswept shots before the rain returned. Those few minutes perfectly captured the essence of the day: spontaneous, joyful, and utterly real.
As the evening unfolded, Justin McGurk took over the music, and the dance floor never emptied. Guests embraced the stormy night, and the love between Carla & Ciarán lit up the entire room.
From a filmmaker’s point of view, it was a reminder that wedding videography isn’t about perfect conditions — it’s about capturing real emotion. The sound of laughter over the wind, the sparkle of candlelight against rain-streaked windows, the way two people can make a stormy day feel like sunshine.
For anyone planning a wedding in Donegal or Northern Ireland, take a note from Carla & Ciarán: it’s not the weather that makes a wedding — it’s the people who fill it with love and life.
